Black Panther’s Chadwick Boseman Wins GQ’s International Man of the Year Award

The long and glittering list of GQ’s International Men of the Year has just added another name: Chadwick Boseman.

Speaking to the press after his win, the Marvel star discussed the challenge of adapting to his higher profile since Black Panther smashed box office records earlier this year. “Day to day, it’s a different experience,” the actor said. “You try to keep things the same and they are, you’re still living, breathing, eating, loving your family and friends but it is a little bit different when you go outside.”

Boseman was joined on the red carpet by some familiar faces from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, including his Avengers: Infinity War costars Tom Hiddleston and Chris Hemsworth. The latter was on hand to present Boseman with the award.

While he may not be the first superhero actor to catch the magazine’s attention — Ryan Reynolds won its voters over as Deadpool in 2016, and Suicide Squad‘s Joker, Jared Leto, received their Actor of the Year award in 2017 — Boseman has entered some rarefied air with his win. People from diverse disciplines and professions, from athletes to politicians to entertainers, have received the Men of the Year awards from GQ since 1996, with British GQ launching the official ceremonies in 2009.

Boseman also revealed he is on the cover for the upcoming British GQ Social Issue, boasting a photo shoot that looks fit for a king, and is certainly appropriate for the magazine’s man of 2018. The issue also features fellow Black Panther actor Daniel Kaluuya and Thor: Ragnarok star Jeff Goldblum, who took home this year’s Icon Award.

As for what’s next for T’Challa, Boseman is still playing coy about whether we’ll be seeing him in the role again. The studio hasn’t confirmed a Black Panther 2 so far, though with the original film’s success it seems like a safe bet. We won’t have to wait much longer to get a few hints about his character’s fate: the Infinity War sequel is scheduled to be released on May 3, 2019.
